Naturally Aspirated, Unnaturally Consistent: The See Red Camaro's 13 Appearances on the Fastest 100 List

James ‘Doc’ McEntire and Jeff McConnell put the See Red Camaro at the front of Naturally Aspirated performance beginning at Hot Rod Drag Week 2006 and have appeared on the Fastest 100 Racer List 13 times in the last 21 years. The only racer to make that list as many times is Clark Rosenstengel.

In 2006, just finishing Drag Week landed you on this list as there were only 86 racers who finished the second event. They finished as Tenth Quickest with a 9.69 Average across five days of racing and 1,000+ street miles! 

The following years would make Doc’s Camaro a feared competitor, and a well-known story, in the hot rod community.

Fastest 100 Racer List by Year

It is wild to think that a Naturally Aspirated Street Driven car can go this quick while also driving 1,000+ street miles in a single week. If you average his averages you end up with an 8.80. But, the last 10 years have all been quicker. In fact, since 2016, Doc’s Camaro dropped the average to 8.19 with one Seven Second average and three 8.0x averages. The consistency of racing the same car over the years, while continually adding power, makes this such a great story and should stand as a blueprint for most racers. 

With the success they have seen over the years with the See Red Camaro, the team made the difficult decision to build a new car after the 2023 season. The new car will be lighter, more powerful and built with one thing in mind - “naturally aspirated street car dominance as the goal.”

Why would anyone choose to race a platform that is at the mercy of Mother Nature, while also being one of the most difficult platforms to make driveable? To quote Jonathan Stonecipher, “Because it’s hard. Because it takes patience and planning like no other engine combination. You can’t simply “turn up the boost” if you are off a few numbers. You have to find ways to make it work as an entire package to go fast.” 

The Corvette is going to be cutting edge.

We can’t wait to see the new car debut and hope it is soon. Doc and Jeff are pretty tight lipped with updates recently, with the last car update coming nearly three months ago with a Facebook post “How to get full creative control of the OG Goodwin Competition hemi in a very soon to debut N/A street car project? AMP EFI, of course!” But their definition of “soon” and my interpretation of “soon” are wildly different. When I asked for an update, Doc gave us more than we bargained for, this car is going to be awesome. 

"I am pressing for a 2027 debut. I have many obstacles to overcome. The Corvette is going to be cutting edge. We will compete with no trailer — two-lane blacktop style. With an experimental 3-speed transmission by Coan, Goodwin Hemi power, and Jeff McConnell tuning a prototype AMP EFI ECU, while racing and driving on a Mickey Thompson radial with no wheelie bar, the learning curve will be steep.

It will not be a transformer car. That is not my style. My Camaro was at a point where it was losing its identity. Its physical mass was causing brutal structural stresses going 1.11 60-foot times. The evolution of my performance was keeping us from experiencing the drives and hanging out with the drag-and-drive family. The Corvette will make an impact on what a street-driven car is expected to be. It will be truly unique, and I don't have a rival — only the desire to drive a fucking fast hot rod down the road where people can look and say, 'That is a sweet Corvette. That guy is out of his mind.'" —Doc
